A handwritten French-Ottawa dictionary compiled by an unknown author, circa 1771. Entries run A thorugh "Epée" only.

This item contains Jefferson's comparative vocabulary, based on his collection of vocabularies taken on printed forms; a second comparative vocabulary; and John Sibley's vocabulary of the Caddo language. This document was damaged in transit from the White House to Monticello in 1809 (see letters of Jefferson to Peter S. Du Ponceau, November 7, 1817, and April 26, 1816.)

Traditional and Christian songs in the Ottawa and Chippewa languages, recorded with numerous singers in multiple communities in Michigan in the mid-1950s. Recorded as part of Gertrude Kurath's broader study of contemporary religion and music among Anishinaabe communities in Michigan. Includes traditional songs, Catholic and Methodists hymns, and Free Methodist revival meetings, including some benedictions. Also includes one talk entitled, "Longfellow's Use of Michigan Indian Tales."

This collection consists of Ottawa songs, interviews, word lists, legends, Nanabojo stories, autobiographical stories, and information on Ottawa history. Some of the material is given in both Ottawa and English, some in Ottawa only. Recorded by Jane Ettawageshik in Michigan from 1947 to 1948.

Recorded by Anthony Wallace in 1948 and 1949 at the Tuscarora Reservation in Niagara County, New York. Contains folkloric stories, tribal histories (especially relating to the 18th and 19th centuries), autobiographical stories, reminiscences, word lists, and descriptions of tribal government, organizations, and customs. Almost all stories are given in both Tuscarora and English. Originally recorded on 16 wire spools, transfered to open reel tape in 1950.

Though the Miscellaneous Manuscripts collection is composed of items that do not fall readily into any other existing collection, the two dominant intellectual areas represented in the collection are Early American History and History of Science.
